Sensible Sustainability
Ok, we’ve hit upon another area where we’re a bit passionate. We could be wrong here, but it’s our belief that everyone cares about the environment. Having said that, there is a lot of talk our there about going ‘green’, however, there is little discussion about the true costs of being ‘green’. In many ways this handicaps our ability to make meaningful changes that benefit the environment and our communities.
Sensible sustainability occurs when we can make ‘green’ initiatives more than a zero-sum gain; when it benefits both the individual and the environment.
As you are considering a new home or improvements to your current home, here are some energy efficient options that not only benefit the environment – they put money back into your pocket.
Are these right for you? That can be a complex question. The initial costs of installing an energy efficient item are always higher than their less efficient counterparts. While you will eventually realize a return on this initial investment, it often takes years to see. If you are not planning to stay in your home for at least three to five years, you may take a loss on the investment – though you will have increased the value of your home somewhat.
Luckily, the U.S. government has enacted several tax credits to shorten the amount of time it takes to realize a return on the initial investment. For more information, visit www.energy.gov/taxbreaks
If you have questions or would like more information, we’re happy to sit down with you and discuss all of the options and which ones make sense for you. |
